The US electric power sector is halfway to zero carbon emissions

Renewable energy’s rapid growth is accelerating a national shift to a carbon-free electric power system.

So far 17 states plus Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico have adopted laws or executive orders setting goals for reaching 100% clean electricity by 2050 or sooner. And 46 U.S. utilities have pledged to go carbon-free. Now the Biden administration and some members of Congress are proposing to decarbonize the power sector by 2035.

When we think about the deserts of the world, water abundance is one of the last things that come to mind. But that might change for the Taklamakan Desert in northwest China.

While studying the amount of carbon dioxide in the desert’s air, a team of researchers was surprised to learn that large amounts of the greenhouse gas were disappearing around a region of the desert called the Tarim basin.

The Advancing the Bioeconomy: From Waste to Conversion-Ready Feedstocks Workshop, coordinated by the Bioenergy Technologies Office, gathered experts in the fields of waste management, solid materials handling, and biofuel and bioproduct development and production to give presentations.

The workshop explored the potential of using the various components of the municipal solid waste stream (i.e., yard waste, unrecycled paper, food waste, and plastics) to produce feedstock for fuels, chemicals, and products. This document provides an overview of the presentations and breakout session discussions.
